<p>The article examines the role of narrative competence as a cognitive skill determining the success of foreign language acquisition by students of non-linguistic majors. The central thesis is that the comprehension of implicit meanings and indirect speech acts in foreign-language discourse depends directly on the level of narrative strategies developed in the learner's native language. The theoretical framework draws on the principles of linguistic pragmatics and cognitive linguistics, based on the works of N. D. Arutyunova, E. V. Paducheva, I. M. Kobozeva, and N. Chomsky. The empirical basis includes statistical data on the decline of reading activity among young people and the results of sociological surveys demonstrating a deficit in the practice of working with complex texts. The study establishes a correlation between reduced reading experience and difficulties in interpreting subtext, irony, and cultural references in foreign-language texts. A set of methodological techniques is proposed for the targeted development of the ability to identify and interpret implicit information, including the analysis of mini-narratives, work with fragments of business communication, and the comparison of direct and indirect formulations. The techniques are adapted to the professional context of students and are designed for integration into English language courses at non-linguistic universities. The practical significance of the work lies in the possibility of compensating for the deficit in reading practice through focused training in meaning reconstruction skills.</p>
<kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>нарративная компетенция</kwd><kwd>имплицитность</kwd><kwd>методика преподавания</kwd><kwd>английский язык</kwd><kwd>когнитивные навыки</kwd><kwd>неязыковой вуз</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>narrative competence</kwd><kwd>implicitness</kwd><kwd>language teaching methodology</kwd><kwd>English language</kwd><kwd>cognitive skills</kwd><kwd>non-linguistic university</kwd></kwd-group><funding-group xml:lang="ru"><funding-statement /></funding-group><funding-group xml:lang="en"><funding-statement /></funding-group></article-meta></front><body /><back><ref-list /></back></article>
